Kinema Citrus produced a 25-episode anime TV series aired in June 2019. The anime series is available on Crunchyroll. Season 2 and Season 3, are under development. The anime received worldwide recognition and was also ranked 5th most popular Isekai anime in Japan. The anime also ranked as the 23rd all-time favorite anime in Japan along with its Opening theme “Faith” as 2nd most downloaded anime theme song during spring 2019.
The story follows Iwatani Naofumi, a run-of-the-mill otaku, who finds a book in the library that summons him to another world. He is tasked with joining the sword, spear, and bow as one of the Four Cardinal Heroes and fighting the Waves of Catastrophe as the Shield Hero.
Excited by the prospect of a grand adventure, Naofumi sets off with his party. However, merely a few days later, he is betrayed and loses all his money, dignity, and respect. Unable to trust anyone anymore, he employs a slave named Raphtalia and takes on the Waves and the world.
